How to enter the Minister's Award for Urban Design
Entries are now open for the Minister’s Award for Urban Design. There are 3 award categories:
- Minister’s Award for Urban Design
- Malcolm Middleton Award for Housing Innovation
- Movement and Place Award
Your entry should be clear and concise. If you’ve previously entered the project in another awards program (e.g. the Australian Institute of Architects Awards or the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Awards), you may reuse the same submission materials.
Your entry should include:
- a short description highlighting key design features and innovations.
- photographs (maximum 5)
- relevant plans, sections, and sketches
There is no entry fee for the awards. Refer to the terms and conditions for more information.
Submissions close 5pm, Friday 2 May 2025 2025 . Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 15 July 2025.
Award Categories
Minister’s Award for Urban Design
The Minister's Award for Urban Design recognises contemporary Queensland urban design projects of the highest quality. It encourages cities, towns and communities across Queensland to strive for best practice in all projects.
The award highlights the critical role of good urban design in shaping Queensland and how collaborative relationships can lead to the successful development of the built environment.
Entries for this award will be considered against good urban design principles, as outlined in QDesign , namely:
- Be climate responsive.
- Inspired by local character, form and culture.
- Work with and enhance natural systems, landscape character and biodiversity.
- Create well defined, legible and connected streets and spaces.
- Create great places for people to live.
- Deliver diverse development forms and density.
- Embed opportunities for adaptation and change.
- Lead by example.
- Engage effectively.
Malcolm Middleton Award for Housing Innovation
The Malcolm Middleton Award for Outstanding Liveable Design recognises contemporary Queensland residential projects that prioritise accessibility and liveability, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and design excellence throughout all aspects of the development.
Entries for this award should represent new housing solutions that met contemporary community, urban, and environmental challenges. Entries should demonstrate excellence against 1 or more good urban design principles as outlined in QDesign .
Movement and Place Award
The Movement and Place Award celebrates projects that successfully integrate transport and movement outcomes while delivering high-quality spaces that maximise social and economic benefits for communities across Queensland.
Entries for this award will be considered against objectives and outcomes as established by the Department of Transport and Main Road’s Movement and Place Policy , including the delivery of:
- vibrant and successful places
- happy and healthy people
- natural, sustainable, and resilient communities
- connected, accessible, and convenient ‘movement’ for people and goods.
